Everything Austen Challenge

I am a huge Jane Austen fan. I've read Pride and Prejudice dozens of times and watched the movie (the BBC / Colin Firth version, of course, which I own on both vhs and dvd) equally as many times. My daughter, Emma, is named after...can you guess?? Anyway, when I saw that Stephanie at Stephanie's Written Word had come up with an Everything Austen Challenge, I knew it was for me.

So, how does it work, you ask? The challenge will run for six months (July 1, 2009 through January 1, 2010 - I'm a tad late getting in). During that time, you'll need to pick out six Jane Austen-themed things to complete. They can range from reading Austen's novels, watching film adaptations, or even reading more contemporary 'sequels' or Austen related novels (like Austenland, by Shannon Hale, for example). If you decide to join, sign up at The Written Word, and you might just win a prize!

So, here's my tentative list of Austen items:

  1. Watch Sense and Sensibility.
  2. Re-read Pride and Prejudice (it's been a while, and I'd like a refresher before I get to number 3).
  3. Read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.
  4. Watch Becoming Jane.
  5. Read Pemberley by the Sea, by Abigail Reynolds.
  6. Read a yet-to-be-named novel. (I'd love some recommendations!)

So, there you have it. My not quite complete list - I'm terribly excited about this challenge. If you're also doing the challenge, please post a link to your list. I'd love to see what everyone else is doing. And, if you've got a suggestion for my item number 6, add that in the comments as well. Tell me your favorite Austen novel, or even a favorite 'sequel' or tie-in sort of novel. I may end up doing more than the required six, so feel free to recommend more than one.

Sounds like a fun challenge. I really enjoyed "Darcy's Story" by Janet Aylmer. In my "to be read" pile is "Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor" which is the first in the Jane Austen Mystery series by Stephanie Barron.

I would suggest that you check out The Darcys and the Bingleys by Marsha Altman - a sequel to P&P. Very well written and lots of fun to read!!

By the way, click on the green Everything Austen tab at the top of my blog to see where you can link to your reviews as the challenge continues and you can see what other people have been reading/watching too!!

Yay! I'm not the last to join it... lol. I've got a page for all my challenges. I didn't have any trouble naming six items, though, and ended up with bonus items to boot ;-) P&P&Zombies is on mine, as well.

Oh P&P is my favorite. I have yet to read the Zombies version though. I was not sure about it at first, but have been told I should approve. :)

I really liked Becoming Jane. I look forward to reading your thoughts about it.

I liked the series that starts with "An Assembly Such as This." It's 3 books, so it may be a little longer than you're looking for. I also liked two non-fiction books, What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew, a sort of trivia about historic England in books, and The Friendly Jane Austen, a collection of things related - quizzes, articles, biography, etc.

Hi there! I'm an Austen-lover, too! (And a Colin Firth fan, btw ;)

I thought I'd recommend Mr Darcy, Vampyre (I was surprised at how great this book was!)

And A Walk with Jane Austen--it's actually non-fiction, but reads like fiction and is just fabulous!
